Wanderlust Wednesday: Dominican Republic

Join me as I reflect on a peaceful mother-daughter trip to the Dominican Republic through a photographer’s lens — from turquoise waves and golden hour beaches to funny travel moments, and luxury resort experiences. A visual travel diary filled with relaxation, storytelling, and island inspiration. 🌴📸

Punta Cana, Dominican Republic

The Flight

The flight to the Dominican Republic was mostly smooth… until the last ten minutes. Those were the longest ten minutes of my life! The plane decided to take a little dip, and my stomach went with it. My mama, “Hold on, Capt’!” Y’all, I have inner ear issues, which can trigger my motion sickness. I wasn’t worried about the plane falling out of the sky…I was worried about losing my breakfast.

Finally! We landed! Deboarding the plane, I saw my mom’s name on one of the little screens the airport transporters have to help those with assistance through the airport. I’m so grateful to those guys. I know it's their job, but it still makes it easier for those who need assistance to navigate the airport. It made customs, baggage claim, and getting to the transport van go more smoothly.

Traffic

Punta Cana traffic reminded me of Atlanta. Nobody appeared to believe in lanes; everyone passed wherever they pleased, and the emergency lane was not used for emergencies.

Checking In

Let’s talk about security for a moment.

Our van stopped at the entrance gate, and security immediately asked for our names before allowing us onto the property. I remember thinking: “Oh…if your name isn’t on the list, you’re not getting in here.”

That instantly made me feel safe. By the time we reached the lobby, they were already greeting us by name. Complete with a lavender-soaked towel for cooling off and champagne! So, Fancy! The service at the hotel was phenomenal! I like to think I’m well-traveled, but this, by far, was the best service I’ve ever received.

The hotel lobby reminded me of old Hollywood glam with a touch of paradise. Open air, cool breeze, tropical scents, grand staircase leading down to the courtyard and the beach.

The Room

The room itself was beautiful — spacious, clean, and perfect for a five-night stay. I especially appreciated the separate WC and the fact that the shower got HOT. And yes, I absolutely judge hotels based on hot water. I like to twirl like a rotisserie chicken in the shower. So the hotter, the better!

We had a beautiful view of the courtyard, swimming pools, and, of course, the ocean—also, something I didn’t expect. The DR is in the Atlantic Time Zone. So even though the current time shows EST, sunrise and sunset are earlier than in Georgia.

Buffets and Restaurants

There were a variety of restaurants to choose from, and we dined at several during our stay. Italian, traditional steakhouse, quick bites, beach bar, and buffets. My mom loves a buffet. Senior citizens typically do (Boomer behavior). I must say, I’m not a fan. In the U.S., buffets sometimes feel like a free-for-all of uncovered food, sticky fingers, and germs.

But the buffet at Hyatt Zilara/Ziva completely changed my mind. Everything was behind glass, freshly prepared, and served by masked and gloved staff. There were endless options, including made-to-order stations where chefs cooked meals right in front of you. My first night? Fresh pasta and shrimp.

Beach Bum & The Wedding Ring

My mom, my camera, my book, ocean waves, and a virgin daiquiri in hand — that was the vibe for after breakfast.

Somewhere between reading chapters and staring at the water, I overheard a nearby group talking about relationships. Typical relationship struggles. I minded my business and went back to my book…until I suddenly heard cheering.

I looked up just in time to see a woman fling something into the ocean before turning dramatically toward the beach with her arms spread wide.

“My husband just left me, everybody!”

I don’t judge. I’ve never been married, I’m currently single, and my past relationships are buried deep in the recesses of my mind, never to be heard from again. But sitting there watching the waves, I found myself quietly wishing peace to both the people ending relationships and the people beginning them.

Because love was definitely in the air! Engagements and wedding parties took place throughout our stay. Also, the Iron Man competition was in town for the weekend. Who knew?

Golden Hour

One of my favorite moments from the trip was catching both sunrise and sunset. True golden hour. Quiet. Peaceful. Room service for breakfast. Ocean waves in the distance. My mom playing on her iPad.

Honestly, it was the kind of stillness you don’t realize you need until you finally have it.
